For the solex which are in good condition general but whose engine does not function, a simple cleaning is often enough to set out again.

Blocked engine?

The engines of Solex are relatively easy to give on the way if the piston is not blocked in the cylinder. To check it, it is necessary to dismount the mask of the magnetic wheel and to make turn the wheel to the hand or while pushing Solex, engine in catch. The engine must turn and present hard points which are times of compression. Ca makes it possible to also check that the segmentation of the piston is good. If the magnetic wheel turns in the vacuum, the moulded key of the wheel and the clutch will be to check.
Attention so that the engine does not start with your hand on the magnetic wheel!!!

Lighting

In the case or the engine is not blocked and has a good compression, the first stage is the cleaning or the change of the candle. Its replacement must absolutely be done by a candle of same characteristics to prevent that the part inside the cylinder does not return in contact with the piston at the time of its increase. To reach the candle, it is simply necessary to remove the air filter. A possible test to check that the components of lighting are still good is to go up the wire high voltage on the candle and to put in contact its lower body with the cylinder. While making turn the engine (to two:  one pushes Solex, the other holds the candle in position with an insulating grip) of the sparks should be visible. In the contrary case, the magnetic wheel must be dismounted with an extractor to allow the cleaning of the contact points, even the change of the condenser (available nine in the Solex dealers).

Gasoline

The second stage is the cleaning of the gasoline circuit and in particular of the tank, the pump and the jet. These bodies are often in good condition but the oil contained in the gasoline settles slowly with the years of nonuse.
The jet is the only screw on the carburettor behind the cylinder. It is generally written there Solex. One cleans it in gasoline, then with a blow of compressed air.
The petrol station is on the front of the engine. There are four screws to dismount. Attention with their reassembly, they do not support an important tightening. A cleaning with the gasoline of the pump and membrane are enough.
The cleaning of the tank is extremely important. It is necessary to dismount it, empty it of its contents, and to clean it with water under pressure for example and to rinse it with gasoline before its reassembly. Attention not to damage the small filter which is at the bottom, accessible by control between tank and pump.

Starting

After having to check the brakes (Ca will not go very quickly but good...!)  and does not fill the tank with gasoline with oil 2T 3%, it does not have there any more but to push Solex, engine in low position, while decompressing with the order with the handlebar on the first meters. The choke is the small strip behind the air filter. Completely with thorough on the left, the mixture is richer in gasoline, thorough on the right, the mixture is less rich. According to the outside temperature and that of the engine, it will be necessary to play with this strip. A too rich mixture will not make it possible to go quickly and the engine like will be attached.

If the engine refuses to start or if its rate/rhythm is not regular, it will be necessary to go further in disassembling.
A disassembling of the candle directly after the attempt at starting will indicate if the mixture reached the cylinder (wet candle).
The test of the spark is to be made if it were not carried out before.
Weak performances  can come from a worn segmentation. Ill exists apparatuses relatively good markets to measure the compression ratios.
